Lydia Rubio

Lydia Rubio is a multidisciplinary visual artist with a 45-year studio practice focused on painting, artist books, and public art. She is the third generation in a family of woman painters. Her technically detailed art navigates a poetic interplay between the cultures of the South and North, the tangible and the abstract, engaging themes of identity and the natural environment.


Her paintings have been exhibited in over 35 solo international gallery shows and national museums including the Bronx Museum of the Arts, Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, and 91 group exhibitions. Collections include the Art Museum of the Americas, Eskenazi Museum, the Lowe Art Museum, NSU Art Museum, Santa Barbara Museum of Art among others. Her unique artist books have been shown at the Center for Book Arts in NYC and can be found in libraries among them Stanford University, University of Southern California, and the Wolfsonian-FIU, and private collections in New York, Bogota, and Switzerland. Awards include a Tree of Life award, Ellies Creator Award, Pollock Krasner grant, and Cintas Fellowship.


Rubio holds a Master of Architecture from Harvard University, Graduate School of Design. Teaching experience includes Parsons School of Design, where she programmed and lead the Visual Thinking studio for three years, Harvard University Graduate School of Design, the University of Puerto Rico, and individual artist coaching.
